End of Unit Assessment

Part 1.*

1. Find a text of your choice which uses challenging language for you (poem, essay, short story, excerpt from a novel, music lyrics, magazine article, etc.) and gives two or more examples of:

• figurative language
• nuances in word meaning (denotative and connotative meanings)
• unknown words

2. Use an active reading technique that works for you to identify these examples. You will need to find two or more of each.

3. Write an essay that examines the impact the use of figurative language and nuances in word meanings have on the text. Also include in your essay what words (two or more) you did not first understand, how you inferred meanings for these words. You will then evaluate your inferences by finding the words' true meanings from some source such as a dictionary.

Part 2.

1. Give an example of your own writing that uses figurative language and language that is carefully selected to express your message and who you are.

2. Identify your use of figurative language and the words and phrases you carefully selected when writing. Do this on your example itself.

3. In a short author's statement, tell us about why you chose the language you chose. Make sure to mention your choice in figurative language as well as other specific words and phrases that express what your message is and who you are as a person.

*Part 1 will be given before Part 2 in the middle of the unit.  Parts 1 and 2 will be handed in together by the end of the unit.
